Two renowned Scottish singers are set to travel to Portsoy to perform at this year’s Scottish Traditional Boat Festival.
Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes will headline the Friday Night Gig at the Green event on Friday 21 June.
Friends for more than 40 years, the singers have often found themselves performing alongside each other as separate acts, occasionally performing together and singing on each other’s records. Now they’ve reunited to perform a wonderful blend of folk songs, classic pop influences and self written favourites.
Dunfermline born Barbara has established herself as a multi-million selling recording artist with mainstream chart hits including ‘Answer Me’, ‘Another Suitcase in Another Hall’ and million-selling number one single ‘I Know Him So Well’. As Scotland’s best-selling female album artist, she has earned 6 platinum, 11 gold and 7 silver albums throughout her career.
Her stage career has included roles in ‘Blood Brothers’ and ‘Spend Spend Spend’, both of which have won her an Olivier Award for best actress.
Barbara was awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen in the 2002 New Year’s Honours for her services to music and drama.
Rab Noakes has enjoyed a varied and illustrious musical life including being a member of Stealers Wheel and writing songs for hit-makers Lindisfarne. He has enjoyed regular appearances on iconic shows in TV and radio, as well as live performances and consistent touring. Celebrating 50 years on the road in 2017, he released ‘The Treatment Tapes EP’ and has enjoyed a recent successful solo tour.
Looking ahead to their performance, Barbara commented, “I’m very excited about playing in Portsoy, as the enduring memory I have of that name, is that it’s where Jimmy MacBeath was born! Rab Noakes and I play together infrequently, so it’s doubly exciting to come to the Boat Festival with Rab and to play in the North East again”.
Rab added, “I had a great time at the Portsoy Folk Festival, with Allan Taylor, in June 2018. On that occasion both Jimmy MacBeath and Jeannie Robertson joined us on stage, by means of Jan Miller papier mache sculptures. I’m delighted to be returning to bonnie Portsoy, to perform with Barbara at the 2019 Boat Festival”.
The Friday night gig is kindly sponsored by David Urquhart Joiners, based at Glenglassaugh near Portsoy. Entry is by ticket and demand is expected to be high, so music fans are encouraged to buy early online at www.stbfportsoy.org or at the Festival Ticket and Information Office in Portsoy from June 15. Tickets cost £20 each.
